In January 2013, The Global Language Monitor ranked SAIC as the #5 college in the U.S., the highest ever for an art or design school in a general college ranking. After facing financial difficulties, it was then reinstated under its current name jointly as a museum and academy of the artists in the late 19th century. News & World Report as one of the top two graduate art programs in the nation, as well as by Columbia University’s National Arts Journalism survey as the most influential art school in the United States. The Art Institute of Chicago was initially founded as the ‘Chicago Academy of Design’ by a group of artists, mostly featuring plaster casts. Among them there are also such notable designers as: Matthew Ames, Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters of Creatures of the Wind, Abigail Glaum-Lathbury, Gary Graham, Halston, Maria Pinto, Cynthia Rowley and Lawrence Steele. Both programs allow students to apply artistic concepts to the actual business of the fashion industry through courses such as merchandise management and marketing. Alumni hold senior design positions in firms as varied as: Yeohlee, Jones New York, Levis, Nike, Charles Chang Lima, Tommy Hilfiger and many more. The Department of Fashion Studies at Columbia College Chicago offers both a BFA and a B.A. The SAIC community reacts to the 2023 Oscars by sharing their thoughts on the winners, movies, fashion, and Hollywood. Upon graduation, many have chosen internships for international houses such as: Viktor & Rolf, Alexander McQueen, Castelbajac, Zac Posen, Vivienne Westwood and Givenchy. Fashion Degree Programs The Art Institutes Fashion Make a name for yourself. Within this Fashion program, you can explore the most progressive achievements in the world of dress and fashion through the Fashion Resource Center, a hands-on collection of late 20th- and 21st-century designer garments representing extreme innovation. Housed in the Sage Studios for Fashion Design within a historic building designed by Louis Sullivan, SAIC’s Fashion department offers one of the most intense, interdisciplinary fashion design programs in Chicago. The school offers BFA, MA of Design in Fashion, Body and Garment, and Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Fashion, Body and Garment. The faculty’s national and international professional experience offers unique opportunities for student learning, travel and global internships. Students who commit to the fashion design degree programs receive a rigorous training which is both artistic and professionally-oriented.
